What is Attar?

Attar, also called ittar or itr, comes from the Persian word itir. It’s a traditional perfume oil made from natural botanical sources.

The history of attar in the Islamic world dates back centuries, deeply intertwined with cultural, spiritual, and scientific advancements. During the Islamic Golden Age (8th–13th centuries), scholars like Ibn al-Baitar and Ibn Sina (Avicenna) revolutionised distillation techniques, refining the extraction of essential oils from flowers and herbs. Attars became integral to daily life, used in religious rituals, personal adornment, and even as healing agents in traditional medicine. The tradition spread across the Middle East, Persia, and the Indian subcontinent, with cities like Baghdad and Damascus becoming hubs for perfume trade. Attars were often mentioned in classical Arabic poetry and Islamic texts, symbolising purity and divine connection, and their use in mosques and during ceremonies remains a cherished practice today.

India has a rich history of making attar, dating back tens of thousands of years. Artisans heat aromatic materials like rose petals, fragrant woods, and spices in copper degs using firewood to extract precious oils. Some still use this traditional method today, especially in Kannauj, Uttar Pradesh.

Over time, the term attar has expanded to include various perfume oils. While it originally referred to fragrances distilled into sandalwood, it now describes many perfume oil blends. The term mukhallat (meaning “blend” in Arabic) is more accurate for mixed perfume oils, but attar remains widely used. Today, attar symbolises luxurious, highly concentrated perfume oils rooted in tradition and craftsmanship.

What is Oud?

Oud oil, also known as agarwood oil, is a rare essential oil from the agarwood tree. Its unique aroma comes from the tree’s response to a specific mould infection. As the tree defends itself, it produces resin, which is distilled into prized oud oil.

Oud comes from various species of agarwood trees, such as Aquilaria Malaccensis, Aquilaria Crassna, and Aquilaria Sinensis. Each species adds distinct characteristics to the fragrance, making oud complex and rich in perfumery.

What is Sandalwood Oil?

Sandalwood oil comes from the heartwood of the sandalwood tree, part of the Santalum genus. The Santalum Album species, native to India, Sri Lanka, and Indonesia, is traditionally used for its prized oil. Australia also grows Santalum Album, along with its native species, Santalum Spicatum (Australian sandalwood).

Other species include Santalum Austrocaledonicum (Vanuatu Sandalwood) and Hawaiian species like Santalum Paniculatum (Royal Hawaiian sandalwood). While many sandalwood species exist, not all are used for oil.

Osyris lanceolata (African sandalwood) and Amyris Balsamifera (West Indian sandalwood) are not true sandalwoods but share aromatic properties. They lack the creaminess of true sandalwood but add unique charm to blends.

With its warm, woody, and creamy scent, sandalwood is a popular base note in perfumery. It’s valued for its calming and grounding properties, making it a prized ingredient in premium fragrances.

How do you use Attar?

Attars are highly concentrated, so apply sparingly. Dab a small amount on pulse points like wrists, neck, and behind the ears. Let the fragrance evolve with your body heat, revealing its unique layers over time.

Oils project less than alcohol-based sprays, and sillage varies by blend. For a long-lasting, well-projecting scent, try Nashwa. For a more intimate scent, our ambergris infusion is perfect. Take your time to explore and find the scent that suits your style and mood.
